The 2024 Taiwan Design Expo will be held in Tainan from Oct. 26 to Nov. 10. With the theme “The Next 400”, this year’s edition features local delicacies and garments designed with regional characteristics. The two main zones of the Expo: the West Market and the Tainan Art Museum Building 2, showcase presentations that incorporate the old and new cultures of the city as well as the Tainan 400 theme. Specifically designed walkways connect the two venues and extend the display area into the city’s alleys and lanes.
Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che remarked that this year’s Expo aims to express “Come visit the Taiwan Design Expo and appreciate good food and garments in Tainan”. We hope to inspire new ideas about the future food and textile/garment landscapes among the public after they see the displays made with oyster shells and design concepts concerning net-zero carbon emission issues. Everyone can find new elements that impress them at the Expo. The two main zones of the event are the Tainan Art Museum Building 2, which was selected by the Central Government, and the West Market that was revitalized by the Tainan City Government. Vendors will enter the West Market after the Expo, keeping this municipal historic site alive in the city’s collective memory.
The Cultural Bureau of Tainan City pointed out that this year is the fifth time Tainan hosted the Taiwan Design Expo. Many representatives of the local food and drink scene as well as textile businesses were invited to take part in the event and generate a new image for the city’s food and garments culture through practical actions such as traceability and design. The Bureau also leveraged the marketplace’s traditional yet creative energy to transform and repurpose the space into an exhibition venue. Later this year, the connecting walkways between the two major exhibition zones (Tainan Art Museum Building 2 and the West Market) will be used as the main trunk to link together the surrounding historical sites, private residences, canals, and business districts to showcase Tainan’s interpretation of lifestyle and living and moving spaces.
